What happened

Federal agencies steered roughly $80 million in grants to the National Park Foundation for Freedom 250, the Trump-chaired entity behind the events marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, while the bipartisan America250 commission had received $25 million of its $150 million appropriation.

Deal or steal?

Freedom 250 is chaired by Trump and run by his top campaign fundraiser and 2024 campaign manager. While it drew this public money, the entity offered private donors a reception and photograph with the president for $1 million, and speaking roles at its events for larger gifts.

Freedom 250, the entity organizing President Trump's 250th-anniversary celebrations, is a limited liability company created by and housed inside the National Park Foundation at the direction of the National Park Service. Federal agencies directed roughly $80 million in grants to the foundation for Freedom 250 events, according to NOTUS and CNBC. By June 2026 the separate, congressionally chartered America250 commission, a bipartisan body established a decade ago, had received only $25 million of the $150 million Congress appropriated for the anniversary, and about $10 million had already been redirected to Freedom 250 for a fleet of mobile museums. The Interior Department instructed staff to make Freedom 250 the "primary branding" for government communications on anniversary events. Freedom 250 says it is not in competition with America250.
