What happened

On January 20, 2025, Trump's "Unleashing American Energy" order directed every federal agency to identify and, within 30 days, begin suspending or rescinding any regulation, guidance, or settlement burdening domestic oil, gas, coal, mineral, hydropower, or nuclear development.

Who enabled it

Deal or steal?

More than a dozen oil-and-gas donors funded Trump's return, including Chevron's $2M and Occidental's $1M inaugural gifts and Harold Hamm's $1M to MAGA Inc.; the order sets every agency to scrapping the rules they want gone.

On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order titled 'Unleashing American Energy,' directing the heads of all federal agencies to review existing regulations, guidance documents, policies, and settlements for any that impose an undue burden on the development of domestic energy resources — including oil, natural gas, coal, hydropower, biofuels, critical minerals, and nuclear energy. Within 30 days, agency heads were required to develop and begin implementing action plans to suspend, revise, or rescind identified actions, in consultation with the Office of Management and Budget and the National Economic Council. The order also directs the Attorney General to notify courts of pending litigation that may be affected and to seek stays where appropriate.
