The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is an executive department of the federal government responsible for coordinating and supervising the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, and, for some purposes, the Coast Guard. Its stated mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure national security. The department is headquartered at the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.
