What happened

Gianni Infantino, FIFA's president, created the FIFA Peace Prize in November 2025 and made Donald Trump its first recipient, presenting a medal, certificate and trophy at the December World Cup draw in Washington. Trump had craved the Nobel, awarded weeks earlier to Venezuela's María Corina Machado.

Deal or steal?

Infantino created the award for a president whose cooperation FIFA needs to stage the 2026 World Cup, the same courtship that had FIFA renting a largely idle Trump Tower office from the president's family business and Trump's Justice Department dropping its decade-old FIFA bribery case.

In November 2025, FIFA president Gianni Infantino created a new award, the FIFA Peace Prize, and named U.S. President Donald Trump its first recipient. Trump received a certificate, a medal, and a trophy at the World Cup tournament draw, held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in December 2025. The award came weeks after the Nobel Peace Prize, which Trump had publicly campaigned for, was given to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. Infantino, who has made cultivating a close relationship with Trump a priority ahead of the 2026 World Cup, did not establish public criteria or a nomination process before naming Trump the winner, and the trophy was repurposed from a piece already in FIFA's possession. Trump called it "truly one of the great honors of my life." The award drew objections from soccer officials, including Norway's federation, who said it breached FIFA's rules on political neutrality.
