What happened

In February 2025, the CFPB dismissed its 2022 enforcement case against credit bureau TransUnion and executive John Danaher, which had alleged they violated a 2017 order barring deceptive marketing. Acting director Russell Vought directed the dismissal.

Deal or steal?

The dismissal spared TransUnion accountability for allegedly breaking a 2017 order against deceptive marketing, a repeat-offender case. It was one of at least seven enforcement actions Trump's CFPB abandoned after Vought took over — including the Capital One suit and four more dropped the same day.

On February 28, 2025, the CFPB under acting director Russell Vought dismissed its 2022 enforcement action against consumer credit bureau TransUnion and longtime company executive John Danaher. The original case alleged that TransUnion and Danaher violated a 2017 order against deceptive marketing practices. The dismissal was part of a broader wave of at least seven enforcement closures since President Trump removed former CFPB director Rohit Chopra in late January 2025. The cases collectively involved allegations that companies had cheated millions of consumers out of billions of dollars.
